Saudi channel Al Ekhbariya reported on Tuesday evening that a Moroccan citizen is among the survivors of the bus accident that occurred on Monday in the province of Asir, southwest of Saudi Arabia, killing 21 people and injuring several others.

The same source stressed that the Moroccan citizen is currently admitted to a hospital in the region to receive the necessary treatment, adding that the Moroccan expressed in statements to the channel his gratitude to the Saudi authorities and the Emir of Asir Province for the help and assistance provided to the injured in this accident. He will leave the hospital tomorrow, Wednesday, to return to Morocco on Thursday, according to the same source.

Saudi media revealed the details of the tragic bus accident. According to them, the tragedy occurred on the link Aqaba Shaar between the city of Abha and the governorate of Muhayil Asir, where the mountain roads of the province are called Aqaba, derived from the difficulty of the narrow road opened in the mountains through tunnels and bridges, as well as deep slopes.

The bus, which was carrying about 50 passengers, overturned while crossing the Aqaba Shaar road, which is about 14 kilometers long, due to a malfunction in the bus’s brakes, according to initial reports.

The accident caused the bus to fall down a slight slope on the side of the road and catch fire before Civil Defense teams, ambulances and firefighters arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the fire and rescuing the passengers.
