Turkish elections: A second round expected between Erdogan and Kiliçdaroglu on May 28

Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his main opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu failed to secure a clear majority in the first round of presidential elections held in Turkey on Sunday and will face each other in a second round scheduled for May 28, according to the Turkish television channel TRT.

Erdogan won 49.34 of the votes against 45% for his rival Kiliçdaroglu (Nation Alliance), TRT said on Monday, noting that the third candidate, Sinan Oğan (ATA Alliance) is credited with 5.23%. , Muharrem İnce, who withdrew from the race, obtained 0.43% of the votes, according to the same source.

According to the first figures, the participation rate in the presidential election was 88.83%, while the counting rate reached 98.31%. As regards the results of the legislative elections, the Republican Alliance obtained 49.31% of the votes, while the Alliance of the Nation, which brings together six opposition parties, had 35.21% of the votes.

In addition, Erdogan called on his fellow citizens to  » stay vigilant until the end of the vote count in the presidential elections » , while his main rival Kiliçdaroglu welcomed a high turnout. Polling stations closed at 5 p.m. local time (GMT +3) on Sunday. 

More than 64 million voters were called to the polls during this double presidential and legislative election. The voting process for Turks abroad took place from April 27 to May 9.
