Experts and specialists discussed, on Wednesday in Rabat, the theme of « mining resources in Morocco » during a study day organized jointly by the College of Sciences and Techniques of the Environment, Earth and of the sea from the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology and the MANAGEM mining group.

On this occasion, the participants highlighted the advances made in the field of mining geology and metallogeny, in addition to discussing the various fields related to this theme.

During this meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of the mining industry and the role of mining geology and metallogeny in improving the human way of life, given the raw materials they use for the manufacture of consumer goods, from the simplest tools to transport vehicles, computers, mobile phones in addition to basic infrastructure such as bridges, roads and buildings.

Speaking on this occasion, the permanent secretary of the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, Omar Fassi-Fehri highlighted the positive impact of the development of the mining industry in Morocco, given its importance in achieving economic and geostrategic issues, emphasizing the possibility of mobilizing scientific research in the service of the development of the mining industry in Morocco and its promotion on an international scale.

This meeting, he said, is an opportunity to shed light on the latest developments in mining geology, emphasizing the importance of training the next generations of geologists and mining specialists to face future challenges and develop this field.

He added that scientific research and innovation, particularly in the mining industry, constitute an engine of economic growth and a factor favoring the manufacture of products likely to develop metallogeny, given the strong demand for mining industry, which has become an accelerating mechanism for the digital transition in various countries around the world.

The highlighting of mining geology and metallogeny comes within the framework of national capacity building in these areas, he said, stressing the need to define the nature of mining resources in order to respond to scientific issues related to this issue in Morocco.

For the executive director of exploration at the MANAGEM group, Lhou Maacha, this meeting is an opportunity to highlight the challenges facing the mining industry sector in Morocco, affirming that the openness to scientific research and the nnovation in the fields of geology and minerals has the potential to advance this science at the national level and to overcome the challenges that impede progress towards the ranks of developed countries in this field.

The holding of this thematic day reflects the place occupied by the mining industries in various countries of the world, he pointed out, believing that the fact of granting greater interest to the field of minerals will inevitably make it possible to strengthen the national industrial sovereignty and the economic development of the Kingdom.

The changes the world is going through represent an opportunity to join the economy of the future, given the growing interest in the mining industry across the world, especially in light of the expanding demographics of the population. and the dynamics associated with it, he said.

For his part, the director of new business development at the MANAGEM group, Yassir Hmidouch, pointed out that the continuous transformation of energy in the world has led to many changes in terms of demand for certain minerals and materials, raising that certain materials are of strategic value to many industrial powers.

Among the main elements of this transformation are the « Li-ION » rechargeable batteries, which are made of strategic and crucial metals and materials such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium, graphite, copper and aluminium, emphasizing that these batteries are essential for green mobility (electric cars) and green energy storage (wind or solar).

He also stressed the need to develop the national battery manufacturing industry, particularly in light of the Kingdom’s economic development strategy based on the development of the automotive industry and green energies.
