Morocco’s unemployment rises to 12.4% in 2023’s Q2 – HCP

Morocco’s unemployment rate rose by 1.2 points to 12.4% in the second quarter of 2023, says the country’s statistics office (HCP, Haut-Commissariat au Plan).
Unemployment rose from 15.5% to 16.3% in urban areas (+0.8 points) and from 4.2% to 5.7% in rural areas (+1.5 points), specifies the HCP in its information note on the market situation in the second quarter of 2023.
According to the same source, the number of the unemployed rose by 156,000 from 1,387,000 to 1,543,000 (i.e. an increase of 11%), resulting from an increase of 92,000 in urban areas and 64,000 in rural areas.
This affected all categories of the population. It increased by 1.1 points for men, from 9.9% to 11%, and by 1.9 points for women, from 15.1% to 17%. It also increased by 1.2 points for those with tertiary education, from 18% to 19.2%, and by 0.9 points for those without, from 3.6% to 4.5%.
The increase in the unemployment rate affected all age groups. It was most pronounced among young people aged 15-24 (+3.4 points), from 30.2% to 33.6%, and among those aged 25-34 (+1.1 points), from 18.7% to 19.8%.
