Stronger energy cooperation between Morocco and the United Kingdom was at the heart of talks held in London on Wednesday between Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and her British counterpart, Claire Coutinho.

Together with the British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Benali discussed the future of energy and environmental cooperation between the two countries and ways to bolster coordination on this issue.

The meeting was « very important » as it provided an opportunity to discuss the « Breakthrough Agenda, » an initiative co-chaired by the two countries at COP26 and which should be on the table at the next Climate Conference scheduled to take place in Dubai, Benali said.

Both countries’ teams are working on this initiative, focusing on the main problem facing all countries that are moving towards carbon neutrality and energy transition, which is the grid and its financing, she pointed out.

« As leading countries in terms of energy stability and transition, it is important that we set an example, » Benali said.

The issue of hydrogen was also on the agenda, especially as the United Kingdom is basing its new energy strategy on partnerships with serious and reliable countries, and Morocco has undeniable potential in terms of competitive green electricity, the official added.

Benali held a series of meetings on the sidelines of her participation in the Energy Intelligence Forum (17–19 October), focusing mainly on energy transition and sustainable development financing.
