The Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opted to suspend Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui for four matches, two of which are suspended, eliciting strong objections from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

The decision, deemed « unjust » by the Moroccan federation, comes in the aftermath of the Morocco-DR Congo game, which ended in a 1-1 draw during the second round of the group stage in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the FRMF declared its intention to appeal the suspension of Regragui, asserting that the decision is « unfounded » based on the fact that « Regragui did not commit any act contrary to fair play at any time. »

The controversy stems from the incidents that transpired after the game, prompting the FRMF to express regret for all the unsportsmanlike acts without fully endorsing the accusations.

The FRMF, in a further statement, highlighted the « special and historical relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the fraternal ties between the peoples of the two countries. »
