Agriculture in Morocco is going through a challenging period. This situation displeases professionals who continually raise the alarm, desperately seeking an active response from those in charge.
The Moroccan Union of Agriculture recently expressed its concerns about the current strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture, describing the situation in the agricultural sector as « catastrophic. » They are calling for a review of these conditions through a national debate, allowing all sector stakeholders to share their opinions and expectations to restore agricultural sovereignty.
According to the Union’s statement, this reaction follows a meeting dedicated to examining various issues affecting agricultural sector employees and users. During this meeting, it was noted that the ministry has not responded to their demands, amidst a decline in sectoral dialogue.
In this context, the Moroccan Union of Agriculture, affiliated with the National Union of Workers of Morocco (UNTM), denounced in its statement the surge in sheep prices for the last Eid al-Adha, reaching unprecedented levels in Morocco. They attribute this increase to « poor management of the animal sector and the opacity surrounding the support for sheep importers and the lack of price control. »
In this regard, the Union renewed its call for the ministry to enact the fundamental law on regional agricultural investment offices, after long negotiations and consultations with social partners. The union condemned Minister Sadiki for his lack of transparency in managing the restructuring process, excluding social actors from consultation.
Furthermore, the Union urged the ministry responsible for the sector to modify the status of employees of the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) to match the specificities of this institution. They also requested strengthening the human and logistical resources necessary to fulfill its missions.
The Moroccan Union of Agriculture expressed its full support for technicians, administrators, and engineers in their struggles for just and legitimate demands. Likewise, they pointed to the government’s shocking silence and inability to address the surge in prices, which has severely affected citizens’ purchasing power and poses a serious threat to social stability.
Indeed, the Union reaffirmed its commitment to continue its union actions, calling on all agricultural workers to fully mobilize against any form of devaluation of union work and to unite around their organization to achieve long-awaited progress.
