After a sharp rise at the end of the previous government’s term, followed by over three years of continuous increase, the prices of cooking oil have recently dropped, approaching pre-increase levels.
Previously priced between 24 and 26 dirhams per liter, cooking oil now costs between 16 and 17 dirhams, marking a decrease of about 8 dirhams or nearly 30%. The half-liter, once over 12 dirhams, is now around 7 to 8 dirhams.
According to professionals, the initial increase in cooking oil prices was about 2 dirhams per liter. Morocco, relying on imports for 98% of these raw materials, saw price hikes due to post-pandemic economic recovery and unfavorable climatic conditions.
The FAO confirmed a global drop in food prices, including oils, due to improved agricultural conditions. Industry professional Mohamed Hassissi noted that prices could continue to decrease if current conditions persist.
Hassan El Moumen, a merchant, observed a decrease in consumption after Eid, also contributing to the price drop. Prices may return to their original levels if the situation remains stable.
