As Morocco prepares to host major global sporting events such as the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the rapid growth of the street-food industry has emerged as a significant hurdle.

Despite its potential for economic advancement, this sector has witnessed a troubling rise in food poisoning cases, raising serious concerns about public health and the nation’s reputation.

The surge in foodborne illnesses not only poses immediate risks to consumers but also threatens Morocco’s image as a safe and attractive destination for tourists and investors alike. Experts emphasize that addressing this pressing issue demands a comprehensive strategy centered on stringent food safety regulations and enhanced industry practices.

Dr. Hassan Ali, a public health specialist, stressed the urgent need for the government to establish clear and enforceable standards for hygiene, food handling, and preparation. “Rigorous inspections and severe penalties for non-compliance are essential to ensure adherence to these standards,”

Marouane Qarab, president of the Insaf Association for Consumer Protection, highlighted the importance of consumer education in promoting safe food practices.

“Empowering consumers with knowledge about food safety, their rights, and accessible complaint mechanisms is crucial,” Qarab stated. He emphasized the role of transparent labeling and ingredient information in building consumer trust and fostering a safer food environment.

Amid economic pressures, stakeholders within the street-food industry are urged to prioritize food safety investments. This includes enhancing infrastructure, implementing advanced technologies, and fostering public-private partnerships to drive innovation and improve industry standards.

The challenges posed by food safety in Morocco’s street-food sector open discussion for the need for proactive measures to safeguard public health and enhance the nation’s competitive edge as a global host for major sporting events.

With concerted efforts from government, industry, and consumer advocates, Morocco aims to mitigate risks and ensure a resilient and thriving food industry that meets international standards.
