The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was not carried out with a guided missile as widely reported, but with an explosive device hidden in the guesthouse where he was staying in Tehran, a New York Times investigation revealed, citing Iranian officials.

The bomb, which detonated at 2AM. on Wednesday, had been secretly placed in an Iranian guesthouse in an upscale neighborhood of northern Tehran about two months prior.

The operation, allegedly executed by exploiting security gaps, is suspected to be the work of Israel, which has yet to claim responsibility, the same source noted.

This follows a pattern of similar operations by Israeli intelligence, such as the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh near Tehran.
