From August 28 to September 8, Paris, the City of Light, will host the 17th edition of the Paralympic Games. As in previous editions, Morocco will be participating in this major sporting event with a delegation of 38 athletes.
Morocco’s goal at these Paris Paralympic Games is to surpass its achievements from the Tokyo 2020 Games, where it won 11 medals, including 4 gold. Since it began participating in the Paralympic Games, the kingdom has accumulated a total of 38 medals, 16 of which are gold.
In this regard, the Royal Moroccan Federation of Sports for Persons with Disabilities announced that it would hold a press conference this Tuesday in Rabat, in coordination with the relevant national federations, to present the Moroccan athletes who will participate in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Moroccan athletes will compete in several disciplines: athletics (physical and visual disabilities), wheelchair tennis (physical disabilities), powerlifting (for short-statured individuals), para-taekwondo, road cycling, and five-a-side football for the blind.
Since the beginning of the Paralympic Games in Seoul in 1988, Morocco has won 38 medals: 16 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze.
At the last Tokyo 2020 Games, with a team of 37 Moroccan athletes, Morocco won 4 gold medals, 4 silver, and 3 bronze, ranking 30th globally and 3rd among Arab nations, behind Tunisia and Algeria.
At the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Games, Morocco secured 7 medals: 3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze, with a delegation of 26 athletes. In London 2012, it won 6 medals: 3 gold and 3 bronze, with a team of 31 athletes.
During the Beijing 2008 Games, Morocco won 7 medals: 4 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze. In Athens 2004, the country won its first two gold medals, along with 4 silver medals.
Before Athens, Morocco did not win any medals in the Sydney 2000, Atlanta 1996, and Barcelona 1992 Games, and it earned a bronze medal in its first participation in Seoul 1988.
Athletics has significantly contributed to Morocco’s medal count with 34 medals. The sports of swimming (Seoul 1988), triathlon (Rio 2016), powerlifting (London 2012), and five-a-side football for the blind (Tokyo 2020) have added bronze medals to the tally.
