In a move reflecting the strengthening of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the Dominican Republic, Dominican President Luis Abinader welcomed Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. During this meeting, President Abinader affirmed his country’s full support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and announced his government’s intention to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla.
A statement from the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that President Abinader views Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only realistic solution to end the conflict over the Sahara, thereby bolstering Morocco’s position on the international stage.
The meeting, held at the National Palace in the capital, Santo Domingo, on the sidelines of President Abinader’s inauguration ceremony, provided an opportunity to reaffirm the shared desire between the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations. Minister Bourita conveyed a congratulatory message from King Mohammed VI to the new president, wishing him success in his duties and inviting him to visit Morocco to expand the scope of cooperation between Rabat and Santo Domingo.
In this context, President Abinader expressed his readiness to deepen relations with Morocco in various fields, emphasizing the importance of his upcoming visit to the Kingdom to benefit from its expertise in many vital sectors.
This step follows the opening of a Chadian consulate in Dakhla just days earlier, bringing the total number of consulates in the southern provinces to 29, with 17 consulates in Dakhla alone, reflecting growing international support for Morocco’s stance on the Sahara issue.
