The dialogue committee representing the majority groups in the House of Representatives has announced that they have received a new proposal from the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation regarding the crisis involving medical and pharmacy students.
Towards an end to the crisis? In a statement, the dialogue committee representing the majority groups in the House of Representatives clarified that, as part of the mediation initiated by parliamentary groups to help find appropriate solutions to end the strikes by students in medical, pharmacy, and dental faculties, they have received the ministry’s responses following the mediation and dialogue process with the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation.
The parliamentary committee has pledged to closely monitor the commitments made by the ministry during the meeting at the House of Representatives on July 10, 2024, particularly regarding the lifting of sanctions imposed on students and their representatives, the cancellation of zero grades, as well as the scheduling of two sessions for the first and second semesters, in addition to ensuring the training hours for the 2019-2024 cohorts according to the pedagogical methods defined by the competent commissions.
In this context, the dialogue committee representing the majority groups in the House of Representatives has urged students to respond positively to the proposal from the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, and to trust the institutions, emphasizing that it will monitor the implementation of the ministry’s commitments to safeguard students’ interests and achieve the best interest for the nation.
Medical and pharmacy students continue to boycott exams, classes, and internships as part of an open-ended strike they initiated more than eight months ago due to various issues related to changes in practical training, the reduction of the medical study duration from 7 to 6 years, and the increase in the number of students.
An extraordinary year, this congestion in the medical sector is unprecedented. Between strikes, boycotts, protests, and demands, eight months have passed, and the standoff between medical students and the government shows no sign of easing.
