The coastal and artisanal fishing landings at M’diq port reached 1,347 tons by the end of August 2024, marking a 26% decrease compared to the same period last year, according to a periodic report from the National Fisheries Office.
The report noted that the commercial value of these landings exceeded 59.83 million dirhams, compared to over 56.05 million dirhams by the end of August 2023, reflecting a 7% growth.
In terms of species, the amount of pelagic fish unloaded dropped by 48% in the first eight months of 2024, amounting to 514 tons, with an estimated value of over 8.58 million dirhams (-43%), compared to around 15.13 million dirhams / 989 tons by the end of August 2023.
Whitefish landings also decreased by 22%, reaching 333 tons, with a value of more than 12.50 million dirhams (+3%), compared to over 12.16 million dirhams / 425 tons on a year-on-year basis.
Meanwhile, cephalopod landings increased by 47%, reaching 380 tons, generating revenues of 25.14 million dirhams (+52%). For crustaceans, landings fell by 13% to 120 tons, with revenues reaching around 13.60 million dirhams (-1%).
It is worth noting that coastal and artisanal fishing landings across various Moroccan ports and fishing villages amounted to 766,196 tons during the first eight months of this year, representing a 2% increase compared to last year. The market value also rose by 5% to reach 7.41 billion dirhams.
