Morocco has risen by four places to rank 66th among the 133 economies evaluated by the Global Innovation Index, as announced today in Geneva.

According to the index, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization, « Thanks to a performance that exceeds expectations given its developmental level, Morocco joins the group of middle-income economies that have made the fastest progress in this ranking since 2013. »

Besides Morocco, this category includes emerging powers such as China, India, Indonesia, Iran, the Philippines, Turkey, and Vietnam.

The organization highlights that Morocco, with a score of 28.8 points, has maintained its position as a « leading country in innovation » for the sixth time, noting that it is one of the three nations where innovation is highly efficient.

On the continental level, Morocco improved its ranking, placing second in Africa, just behind Mauritius (55th globally) and ahead of South Africa (69th), Tunisia (81st), and Egypt (86th), while Algeria lags far behind in 115th place.

Among lower-middle-income economies, Morocco ranks sixth out of 38 nations, following India (39th), Vietnam (44th), and the Philippines (53rd).

In the sub-indices, Morocco ranked 78th in « Institutions », 81st in « Human Capital and Research », 88th in « Infrastructure », 82nd in « Market Sophistication », 70th in « Knowledge and Technology Outputs », and 37th in « Creative Outputs. »

Notably, Morocco is now ranked first globally in industrial designs (having previously been 10th), and is among the top 30 countries for education spending, intangible assets, gross capital formation, high-tech manufacturing, and trademarks.

Now in its 17th edition, the Global Innovation Index serves as a benchmark for global trends in innovation, offering guidance to policymakers, business leaders, and others on how to unleash human creativity to improve lives and address global challenges like climate change.
