Morocco has been deservedly re-elected, through Omar Battas, to the UN Subcommittee on Torture Prevention for the 2025-2028 term. The election took place during the 10th meeting of State Parties, held this Thursday in Geneva, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.
This re-election reflects the international community’s confidence in Morocco’s efforts, thanks to the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to protect and promote human rights in their universality and indivisibility.
It also underscores the credibility of Morocco’s initiatives to address global challenges that hinder people’s enjoyment of their economic, social, and cultural rights.
Omar Battas, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca and head of its psychiatry department, has authored numerous works on torture prevention, the latest being « Managing the Health Emergency in Morocco: Security and Human Rights. »
The Subcommittee on Torture Prevention is a UN treaty body focused on proactive approaches to prevent torture and ill-treatment. It conducts visits to detention facilities to assess the treatment of detainees and advises national prevention mechanisms.
