On Tuesday, Lebanon’s Hezbollah announced the appointment of Naïm Kassem as the party’s new Secretary General, succeeding Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated by the Israeli military last September.

In an official statement broadcast by the party’s Al-Manar TV channel, Hezbollah’s leadership stated that « Sheikh Naïm Kassem has been elected Secretary General of Hezbollah to continue carrying the blessed banner of this movement. »

Naïm Kassem is a prominent and veteran figure within Hezbollah, having served as the Deputy Secretary General since 1991.

He assumed this role during the tenure of former Secretary General Abbas Mousawi, who was killed in an Israeli helicopter attack in 1992. Kassem maintained his position when Hassan Nasrallah took over the party’s leadership.

Kassem’s appointment marks a new chapter in Hezbollah’s leadership amid the challenges the party faces in the region.
