On Thursday in New York, France reaffirmed to the members of the UN Security Council that the « present and future » of the Sahara falls under Moroccan sovereignty, reiterating its « clear and steadfast » support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a final solution to this regional conflict.

The French Ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, stated, « Our position is well-known. For France, the present and future of the Sahara are within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, » following the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2756, which extends MINURSO’s mandate by an additional year.

The ambassador emphasized that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is « the framework through which this issue should be resolved, » affirming that « our support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, proposed in 2007, is clear and firm. »

He also praised Morocco’s efforts toward socio-economic development in the southern provinces, noting « the time has come to move forward » and calling for a meeting of involved parties to reach a political solution.

The UN Security Council has extended MINURSO’s mandate until October 31, 2025, affirming support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a serious and credible basis for resolving the Sahara conflict.
