Morocco’s UN Ambassador, Omar Hilale, announced in New York that the latest UN Security Council resolution regarding the Sahara solidifies the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the « sole and exclusive foundation » for a political solution within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Resolution 2756, which extends MINURSO’s mandate for another year, reaffirms for the 17th consecutive year the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a serious, credible solution.
Hilale highlighted that the resolution calls for increased international support for the autonomy initiative, already backed by 20 EU countries, two permanent Security Council members, and over 100 countries and international organizations.
The resolution also requests the resumption of political talks, urging all parties, including Algeria, mentioned five times, to participate constructively. Additionally, it stresses the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and cooperating with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The Council also emphasized the need for direct distribution of humanitarian aid in the Tindouf camps to prevent diversion by separatist and other groups.
