Morocco chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), held from November 4-8 at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome. For the fourth consecutive time, Morocco received an award for compliance with GFCM standards.

This accolade reaffirms Morocco’s regional leadership and commitment to sustainable fisheries management.

Morocco was represented at the 47th session by a delegation including officials from the fisheries sector, the National Fisheries Research Institute, the National Fisheries Office, and the National Aquaculture Development Agency.

Under Morocco’s leadership, the committee developed recommendations focused on ensuring the sustainability of fish stocks, preserving marine habitats, and promoting environmentally responsible fishing practices, which aim to optimize fisheries management in the Mediterranean region.

This award, received for the fourth time, highlights the FAO’s recognition of Morocco’s efforts in promoting responsible fishing, transparency, and good governance in the fisheries sector, as well as adherence to international commitments.

The 47th session of the GFCM also discussed issues related to the preservation of marine ecosystems, fisheries management, and aquaculture development in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
