The public prosecutor of the Kenitra Court of Appeal has ordered the detention of five municipal councilors under suspicion of bribery in the lead-up to the municipal council elections in Kenitra, where a new president is to be elected following the administrative dismissal of the former president.

Mohamed Ghaloussi, president of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds, revealed that the prosecutor decided to place Mohamed Talmoust from the Social Democratic Movement Party and Abdallah M’Birik from the Moroccan Democratic Union Party in local custody, alongside three other councilwomen.

According to Mr. Ghaloussi, these decisions stem from allegations of corruption and suspicions of offering bribes to sway the election of the municipal council’s president.

The deadline for candidacy submissions is expected to end on Tuesday, November 12, following the dismissal of the previous president, Anas Bouanani, for legal and managerial violations in municipal governance.
