The UN Security Council is expected to vote on Wednesday on a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
According to Maariv, the initiative was led by ten non-permanent members of the Council and formally submitted by Guyana’s delegation. The Walla news site reports that the draft resolution calls for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire without linking it to the release of Israeli captives.
Unnamed Israeli diplomats have claimed that 14 out of 15 Council members support the resolution. However, the U.S. is likely to veto the text unless it includes a condition tying the ceasefire to the release of Israeli hostages.
The current draft does not mention Hamas or condemn the events of October 7, 2023. Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon has reportedly been lobbying intensively to ensure such a condition is added. The U.S. position on the final vote remains unclear.
