The Moroccan government approved today, Thursday, draft law no. 33.22 concerning the protection of heritage, taking into account comments made after its review. This initiative was introduced by Mohamed Mehdi Bensaïd, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
A statement from the ministry in charge of relations with Parliament and government spokesperson highlighted that the draft law aims to strengthen the provisions of Law No. 22.80, which governs the preservation of historical buildings, landscapes, inscriptions, and artworks. It also aligns the national legal framework with Morocco’s international commitments regarding cultural heritage protection and promotion.
The draft law introduces significant updates, including new definitions for various types of cultural, natural, and geological heritage, reflecting internationally recognized concepts, particularly those established by UNESCO.
Key innovations include the creation of a National Heritage Inventory and the adoption of the concept of a Heritage Management Plan, which serves as a strategic agreement outlining goals, programs, implementation mechanisms, and funding involving all stakeholders.
