The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, highlighted that equality, fairness, and the advancement of women’s rights—particularly their greater inclusion in decision-making roles—are hallmarks of the 25-year reign of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Speaking at the inaugural Parliamentary Forum on Equality and Parity, Talbi Alami thanked His Majesty for his patronage of the event, reflecting his unwavering commitment to women’s and family rights.
The Speaker pointed to pivotal reforms, such as the 2004 Family Code, amendments to nationality laws allowing Moroccan mothers to pass citizenship to their children, and positive discrimination policies to boost women’s representation in public institutions. He also mentioned Morocco’s adherence to international conventions on women’s rights and the enactment of laws to combat violence against women.
The inclusion of women’s rights in Morocco’s Constitution represents a defining achievement. Talbi Alami emphasized that the Constitution ensures gender equality across civil, political, economic, and social spheres, aligning with Morocco’s international commitments.
Morocco’s reform model is distinctive for its reliance on consensus and collaboration, ensuring its sustainability. The recent initiative to revise the Family Code, initiated by His Majesty, is a testament to this approach, incorporating wide-ranging consultations with societal stakeholders.
Parliament plays a critical role in implementing and evaluating these reforms, as demonstrated by the recent review of legislation against violence toward women. The establishment of a thematic working group on equality underscores this commitment.
