His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation, emphasized that « since its inception in September 2001, the festival has successfully attracted some of the biggest global cinema stars, enhancing Morocco’s status as a prime destination for major international productions and contributing to the growth of the national film industry. »

In a statement published on the festival’s official website ahead of its 21st edition, scheduled from November 29 to December 7, HRH highlighted that, in line with the royal directives of King Mohammed VI, « supporting young Moroccan cinematic talent remains a steadfast commitment. » The festival has thus supported hundreds of projects, nurturing a new generation of filmmakers, including Asmae El Moudir, the first Moroccan to win the Marrakech Golden Star with her film The Mother of Lies, which previously benefited from the Atlas Workshops.

HRH noted that this remarkable experience inspires future generations and reflects the ongoing progress of Morocco’s film industry, which produced 34 films last year.

This year, the festival enhanced its Atlas Workshops by launching new initiatives such as the Atlas Platform, designed to support young Moroccan professionals and open them to global opportunities.

Additionally, HRH highlighted the crucial role of film critics and journalists in advancing the industry. Dedicated programs were established to enhance their expertise and foster their vital contributions.

The 21st edition will honor three distinguished figures: late Moroccan actress Naïma El Mechreki, Oscar-winning actor-director Sean Penn, and acclaimed Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg. The jury, tasked with uncovering emerging talents, will be chaired by renowned Italian director Luca Guadagnino.

In conclusion, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid expressed his delight in making this event a « powerful moment of shared experiences, cultural exchange, and a heartfelt message of dialogue and peace through cinema. »
