Tribute to Late Naïma El Mechrek at Marrakech International Film Festival

The 21st Marrakech International Film Festival paid tribute on Tuesday to the iconic artist Naïma El Mechrek, who passed away last October. The ceremony, held in the red city, gathered her family, cultural and artistic figures, and media personalities.

This posthumous homage celebrated the memory of a « true icon of national art, » a talented and committed artist who left an indelible mark through her exceptional work.

On behalf of her family, Yasmine El Khayat, the late artist’s daughter, expressed profound gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Marrakech Film Festival Foundation. Receiving the festival’s Golden Star from actress Fatima Khair, she lauded the initiative to honor her mother, describing her as an « extraordinary woman » and a cinema enthusiast known for her humanitarian efforts.

Touching tributes were delivered by figures such as director Mohamed Abderrahman Tazi and artist Fatima Khair, highlighting El Mechrek’s human and professional excellence, her remarkable generosity, and her humility.

The ceremony was followed by the screening of « Autumn of Apples » by Mohamed Mouftakir, featuring the late artist in a leading role.

Born in Casablanca, Naïma El Mechrek was a distinguished figure in Moroccan theater and cinema. She worked with prominent theater groups and starred in films such as « Wedding of Blood » and « The Battle of the Three Kings. » Her contribution extended to television, where she hosted the educational program « Alif Lam, » dedicated to combating illiteracy.
