Spanish football legend Andrés Iniesta officially ended his playing career on Sunday with a thrilling exhibition match between Barcelona and Real Madrid legends in Tokyo. The 40-year-old is now eyeing a future in coaching after a stellar career.
Iniesta announced his retirement last October after a decorated career that included two European Championships and a FIFA World Cup with Spain. Before a crowd of 45,000 fans, he showcased his talent one last time, having been a key figure for Barcelona with 9 La Liga titles and 4 Champions League trophies over 16 seasons.
During the match, one of Iniesta’s precise passes resulted in an own goal by Real Madrid’s defense, sealing a 2-1 victory for Barcelona. « It was a fantastic game for Japanese fans. If they went home satisfied, then I’m very happy, » Iniesta said.
He played alongside his former midfield partner Xavi, as well as stars like Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos. A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Iniesta played 674 matches, won 32 titles, and later joined Japan’s Vissel Kobe before finishing his career in the UAE.
