The death toll from the car ramming incident at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, has risen to four dead and 41 seriously injured, according to German press reports citing police sources.
An initial report on Friday night mentioned two fatalities and over 60 injured, including 15 in critical condition.
Local authorities confirmed that the suspect, a 50-year-old psychiatrist, has been arrested and is now in police custody. Investigators clarified that the alleged perpetrator is not known to the police for Islamic extremism, and they currently consider this an isolated act.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover the motives behind this tragic incident, which evokes memories of the truck attack on the Breitscheidplatz Christmas market in Berlin on December 19, 2016. That attack claimed 13 lives and injured more than 50 people.
