Decline in Coastal and Artisanal Fishing
Coastal and artisanal fishing landings at M’diq Port reached 1,776 tons by the end of November 2024, marking a 22% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, according to a report by the National Fisheries Office (ONP).
Despite this decline, the commercial value of these landings increased by 9%, amounting to over 75.9 million dirhams compared to 69.62 million dirhams by November 2023.
Breakdown by Species
- Pelagic Fish: Quantity decreased by 42% to 726 tons, valued at 11.89 million dirhams (-37%) compared to 18.93 million dirhams for 1,244 tons in 2023.
- White Fish: Dropped by 21% to 438 tons, with a value of 15.94 million dirhams versus 15.84 million dirhams for 552 tons year-on-year.
- Cephalopods: Increased by 51% to 425 tons, generating revenues of 27.79 million dirhams (+58%).
- Crustaceans: Slight decline of 2% to 183 tons, with revenues rising by 18% to approximately 20.25 million dirhams.
National Trends
The ONP reports that the total value of coastal and artisanal fishing products grew by 6% during the first 11 months of 2024, reaching nearly 10 billion dirhams, while their weight fell by 1% to 1,233,568 tons.
