Moroccan Cannabis Reform: Promising Developments
The « Moroccan Advisory Society for Cannabis Use » has expressed great satisfaction with the rise in regulated cannabis production in Morocco, which reached 4,082 tons in 2024.
In a statement, the association noted that “this achievement is the result of significant efforts by the National Agency for Regulating Cannabis-Related Activities, in collaboration with its partners, including farmers, cooperatives, and companies active in processing, marketing, import, export, transport, and nursery creation.”
It praised the establishment of procedures for using seeds of the local variety “El Beldia,” emphasizing that this plant is a uniquely Moroccan product with multiple qualities, including therapeutic benefits.
The association called for a gradual redirection of illegal crops, harmful to the environment, toward sustainable, legal activities that generate value and employment. Additionally, it suggested declaring 2025 as the year for enhancing scientific consultations, organizing conferences and seminars, and launching training operations to develop the multiple uses of cannabis.
Finally, it reiterated its recommendations to:
- Create a national laboratory dedicated to cannabis.
- Develop agricultural vocational training in cannabis cultivation areas.
- Implement specialized technical training for farmers.
- Support the local variety « El Beldia, » whose cultivated areas are gradually declining.
- Promote scientific research on medical and industrial uses.
- Establish a processing industry that adds value to Moroccan cannabis beyond cultivating and exporting raw materials.
