Trump Asks Supreme Court to Delay TikTok Ban
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to suspend a law threatening to ban TikTok in the United States. This comes on the eve of his official inauguration on January 20, as the Chinese company that owns the app faces pressure to sell its assets.
In a legal memorandum submitted to the court, Trump’s legal team argued that, “Given the novelty and complexity of this case, the court should consider postponing the legal deadline to provide more time to address these issues” and “allow room for a political resolution.”
According to CNN, Trump also spoke with TikTok’s CEO following his request to the Supreme Court to halt the ban.
During his first term from 2017 to 2021, Trump was a staunch opponent of TikTok, unsuccessfully attempting to ban the widely popular video app over national security concerns.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in the case on January 10, as reported by NBC.
Trump has raised concerns—shared by other politicians, including rivals—that the Chinese government could exploit the app to access American user data or manipulate content on the platform.
