Abdelouafi Laftit, Morocco’s Minister of Interior, has issued a directive to regional governors and local authorities, urging them to enhance the quality of taxi services across the country. The directive highlights several illegal practices by drivers that discourage citizens from using taxis, opting instead for alternative transport options.

The minister emphasized that taxis are a fundamental mode of transportation, playing a vital role in facilitating urban and rural mobility. They provide convenient and on-demand services, connect cities and remote areas, and serve neighborhoods often underserved by public transport.

To meet citizens’ expectations and boost the sector’s competitiveness, Laftit called for regulatory reforms and concerted efforts to modernize and improve service quality.

Despite progress made, the minister acknowledged ongoing issues, including the use of outdated vehicles, selective customer service, refusal of certain routes, non-compliance with fixed rates, and occasional misconduct towards passengers. These issues tarnish the sector’s image and drive citizens toward alternative, sometimes illegal, transport solutions.

The directive advocates for heightened awareness among industry professionals, the adoption of modern technologies, and the implementation of digital booking systems through mobile apps and online platforms. It also stresses the importance of stricter monitoring of unauthorized transport activities in coordination with law enforcement agencies.
