A Russian non-governmental organization has reported finding over 30 dead whales following the sinking of two oil tankers in the Black Sea in mid-December.

The Russian tankers « Volgoneft-212 » and « Volgoneft-239 » sank during a storm in the Kerch Strait. The ships were carrying 9,200 tons of diesel fuel, of which 40% is estimated to have leaked into the sea, according to Russian authorities.

The NGO « Delpha, » based in Sochi, southwestern Russia, stated, « We found 61 dead whales, 32 of which died after December 15. It is likely that their deaths are linked to the oil spill, » describing the figures as « high and exceptional. »

Specializing in rescuing and rehabilitating cetaceans along Russia’s Black Sea coast, the NGO added, « We receive reports of new dead dolphins almost every day. »

Most of the deceased marine animals are porpoises. The condition of the carcasses suggests that these cetaceans likely perished within the first ten days following the spill.

Despite nearly three weeks of extensive cleanup operations led by authorities and volunteers, the situation remains alarming.
