Justin Trudeau Could Resign as Canadian Prime Minister This Week

The Globe and Mail reported that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to announce his resignation this week amid growing opposition within his Liberal Party.

According to three unnamed sources described as being familiar with internal party matters, the announcement could come as early as Monday.

The announcement is expected to be made at the Liberal Party’s national convention on Wednesday, the newspaper suggested.

Should the resignation occur, it remains unclear whether Trudeau will temporarily stay in office until the Liberal Party selects a new leader, the Globe and Mail noted.

Trudeau came to power in 2015 and led the Liberals to two more election victories in 2019 and 2021. However, he currently trails his main rival, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, by 20 points in opinion polls.
