Romain Saïs Denies Retirement Rumors
Moroccan international Romain Saïs has dismissed rumors suggesting his retirement from international football, confirming they are merely baseless speculation.
In an exclusive interview with Qatar’s “Al Kass” channel, Saïs stated: “After every major tournament, players consider their future, but I was fully convinced that I did not want to retire. I went through tough times, but I was determined to keep defending the Moroccan national team’s jersey as long as I am physically fit. Representing my country is the most important thing in my career.”
The defender added: “I never considered retirement… Moreover, my son told me he doesn’t want me to stop playing for the national team, and I have to fulfill his request.”
Regarding rumors of a potential move to the Moroccan league, Saïs clarified: “I saw the news like everyone else, but there was no official contact between me and Wydad Athletic Club, so it’s just speculation.”
Saïs also discussed the offers he received before signing with Qatar’s Al Sadd club, mentioning he was close to joining Olympique de Marseille after reaching a comprehensive agreement. However, the arrival of new coach Marcelino led to the deal being canceled.
Finally, speaking about the African Ballon d’Or, Saïs expressed his disappointment that his teammate Achraf Hakimi did not win the award: “I am sad for Achraf because he had an outstanding season with his club and our national team. I believe he deserved this accolade. It was disappointing for all Moroccans who were hoping for a fifth Ballon d’Or for a Moroccan player. Nevertheless, congratulations to Lokman, who had an extraordinary season and deserves the title.”
