Healthcare Workers in Morocco Announce National Strikes

Moroccan healthcare unions have declared a series of national strikes, citing the government’s “procrastination and neglect” regarding their legitimate demands.

In a statement issued by the National Union Coordination for the Healthcare Sector, the strikes are scheduled for January 29 and 30, as well as February 4, 5, and 6, 2025. These actions will affect all healthcare institutions nationwide, excluding emergency and intensive care units to ensure continuity of vital services.

Unions explained that this escalation stems from the “deafening silence” of the Ministry of Health and the government’s delay in implementing agreements reached last July. These agreements included improving working conditions, raising wages, and providing effective social coverage for healthcare workers.

The statement warned that ongoing “negative” responses to their demands could exacerbate Morocco’s healthcare crisis, severely impacting the quality of services provided to citizens.

In this context, unions are urging the government to take immediate action to honor signed agreements and improve the professional and social conditions of healthcare employees. They emphasized that these demands are fundamental rights, not mere privileges.

In closing, the unions reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying their actions until the government delivers a tangible response.

As of now, the Ministry of Health has not issued an official comment on the strikes. However, this situation is expected to spark significant debate among political stakeholders and civil society, especially at a time when healthcare sector stability is essential for maintaining basic services.
