Moroccan Man Involved in Tel Aviv Attack: Investigation into Security Breach
Israeli media reported that a Moroccan citizen, Qazi Abdel Aziz, carried out a stabbing attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, injuring four Israelis before being killed by Israeli security forces. Abdel Aziz, who held permanent residency in the United States, had passed two security checks conducted by the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency.
Upon his arrival at Ben Gurion Airport, Abdel Aziz was initially denied entry by border control officers. However, after an interview with a Shin Bet officer, he was granted entry into Israel.
Israel’s Minister of Interior, Moshe Arbel, called for an in-depth investigation into the serious incident. “I commend the efforts of border control inspectors who recognized the issue in real time and tried to prevent the attacker’s entry on January 18, 2025. Unfortunately, the decision was made to allow him access. I urge the Shin Bet director to investigate the matter thoroughly and draw lessons as soon as possible.”
The Shin Bet confirmed that extensive security checks, including interrogations, were conducted upon Abdel Aziz’s entry, but no evidence justified denying him access.
Documents found on him indicated he entered Israel with a tourist visa. Abdel Aziz was shot dead at the scene following the attack, which was reportedly thwarted by an Israeli army officer who had previously been injured in Gaza.
