First Electric Corridor Spain-Morocco

Baleària announced at Fitur its project to launch the first ecological corridor connecting Spain and Morocco. The Tarifa-Tangier Ville route will be served by two 100% electric, zero-emission catamarans.
“This groundbreaking public-private project will allow us to operate fully electric, emission-free crossings for the first time,” said Adolfo Utor, president of Baleària.
In December, the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA) granted Baleària a 15-year contract for this line, prioritizing environmental and technical criteria.
Cutting-edge Technology
The two catamarans, to be built in Gijón, will feature 16 MW of power and 11,500 kWh batteries, enabling 18-nautical-mile crossings with zero emissions. The vessels will also include backup diesel generators and innovative charging systems at the ports.
Strong Public-Private Partnership
The project involves major players like Cotenaval, Endesa, and Amendis. Utor highlighted it as a bridge between Spain and Morocco, promoting economic development and innovation.
Institutional Support
Officials from Spain and Morocco praised the initiative, emphasizing its environmental and economic benefits, with expectations of 4 million passengers.
Technical Details
The ships, inspired by Baleària’s existing gas-powered ferries, will carry 804 passengers and 225 cars, optimized for Tarifa and Tangier Ville.
