The President of Tangier’s Municipal Council, Mounir Laymouri, has pledged to mobilize all efforts within the council’s competencies to meet the expectations of citizens and upcoming international events.
Speaking to MAP Agency, Laymouri stated, “Tangier’s council is fully committed to contributing to the success of upcoming international events, especially the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the FIFA World Cup 2030, in partnership with local authorities and all stakeholders, particularly citizens, who are both partners and beneficiaries of our projects.”
Laymouri highlighted Tangier’s extensive transformation over the past two decades due to royal initiatives and major development projects like “Tangier Metropole” and the “Old Medina Rehabilitation Program.” However, the city’s rapid growth has introduced challenges, such as accommodation and transport issues cited in a recent FIFA report.
Efforts are underway to address these challenges in coordination with institutional partners. Hosting the 2030 World Cup and 2025 AFCON provides a significant opportunity to fast-track planned projects, especially in transportation.
The local development company “Tangier Mobility” has issued tenders to acquire hundreds of modern buses, investing MAD 1.124 billion. Studies are also underway to develop a transport master plan and a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
Technological solutions, such as smart traffic lights, have been implemented to ease congestion. Additionally, Tangier currently has 460 hectares of green spaces, aiming to meet the international standard of 10 square meters per resident.
The regional municipal grouping plans to replace private companies with a public multi-service company for water, electricity, and sanitation by June 2025.
