A Historic Edition of AFCON 2025 in Morocco
The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, described the draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a thrilling event. He also expressed confidence that the 35th edition, to be hosted by Morocco, will be the best in the history of the tournament.
Speaking to the press upon his arrival at Rabat-Salé Airport on Sunday evening, Motsepe said:
“The AFCON 2025 draw, which will take place today in Rabat, promises to be exciting. All teams are eager to find out their opponents.”
Motsepe highlighted his deep admiration for Morocco, stating:
“Coming back to Morocco is always special for me. This country holds a special place in my heart.”
He extended his gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his unwavering support of African football development and praised Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, for his remarkable efforts to advance football in Morocco and across the continent.
He noted:
“When African nations like Morocco excel, the entire continent feels immense pride.”
Motsepe also emphasized the importance of hosting major events like the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Africa, which will further elevate the sport on the continent. He expressed confidence that an African nation will one day lift the World Cup trophy, adding:
“Morocco paved the way during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by reaching the semi-finals. This gives us hope for strong performances by African teams in the 2026 World Cup.”
The draw ceremony for AFCON 2025 will take place this evening at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, starting at 7 PM.
