Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, praised the « historic » and « unprecedented » accomplishment of attracting 17.4 million tourists in 2024 during a session at the House of Representatives on Monday.

In a presentation dedicated to « major trends in tourism policy, » Akhannouch highlighted that this significant milestone, which inspires « pride, » represents the early achievement of ambitious goals set for 2026, two years ahead of schedule.

The Prime Minister showcased key indicators reflecting the remarkable growth of the tourism sector. In 2024, the sector recorded a 20% increase compared to 2023, with a 23% rise in foreign tourist arrivals and a 17% rise among Moroccans residing abroad.

Notably, Morocco welcomed 3 million additional tourists in just one year compared to 2023, almost matching the total increase recorded between 2010 and 2019 (3.2 million). The 2024 figures exceed those of 2019 by 35%.

Akhannouch attributed these « exceptional » results to an effective and integrated governmental approach, emphasizing that the development of the sector was never confined to improving hotels and tourist attractions alone. Instead, a holistic and multi-dimensional strategy involving various sectors and public policies was adopted.

Through strategic and targeted measures, the tourism sector managed to recover and achieve substantial positive transformations. These policies ensured sustainable recovery, leading to a significant improvement in the sector’s key indicators.

Akhannouch reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making tourism a cornerstone of inclusive and sustainable development, aligned with King Mohammed VI’s vision for all Moroccans.
