Tragedy in Taroudant: Five Workers Killed in Tunnel Explosion

The municipality of « Ahl Tafnout » in Taroudant province announced on Monday the death of five workers in a tunnel explosion at the Mokhtar Soussi dam in the Ouzioûa area.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the municipality explained, “After numerous attempts, the bodies of the five victims, trapped inside the tunnel at the Mokhtar Soussi dam elevation project due to a gas leak and explosion, were recovered around 4 a.m.”

The municipality highlighted that “Rescue efforts lasted for many hours and involved local authorities led by Ouzioûa, the Royal Gendarmerie, Civil Protection, Auxiliary Forces, a rescue team from the Zgounder mine, volunteers, and workers. The site of the accident was also visited by Governor Mabrouk Tabet and several officials to oversee the rescue operations.”

The municipality’s president extended his condolences to “Lahcen Saadi, Secretary of State for Handicrafts, for the loss of his uncle” and “to all the families of the other victims from the Ouzioûa region.”
