Controversial Ruling Grants Ex-Husband Half of His Former Wife’s Villa
In a groundbreaking legal case that has sparked heated debate in Morocco, the First Instance Court of Sefrou has ruled in favor of a man, granting him half ownership of a villa belonging to his ex-wife. The man claimed he contributed to its construction during their marriage.
The case, which dates back to mid-January, began when the wife filed for divorce and continued living in the villa, which official documents confirm is legally hers.
However, after the divorce, the ex-husband filed a lawsuit demanding half of the property, arguing that he had contributed to its construction, even though the villa was registered in his ex-wife’s name.
The ex-wife, on the other hand, denied any financial contribution from her former spouse, asserting that his role was limited to supervising the workers and overseeing the construction.
After reviewing the case, the court ruled in favor of the ex-husband, granting him half of the villa. This decision has ignited widespread discussion, particularly in the context of the ongoing debate on reforming Morocco’s Family Code, especially regarding the rights of spouses after divorce.
