Syrian Transitional President Ahmed Shar’a has announced critical steps for the transitional phase, including issuing a constitutional declaration, establishing a national dialogue committee, and forming a new legislative council to replace the dissolved People’s Assembly. He also pledged to ensure civil peace and maintain Syria’s unity.

His statements followed decisions to abolish the previous constitution, dissolve armed factions—including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham—and form an interim government to administer the country until March.

In his first official speech since taking office, Shar’a emphasized his commitment to structuring the political transition. He detailed the imminent creation of a preparatory committee for a national dialogue conference and another committee tasked with selecting a small legislative council.

He stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and ensuring justice for crimes committed under the previous regime.

These announcements come after the dismantling of the former regime’s armed forces and the termination of the Ba’ath Party’s decades-long rule.

Ahmed Shar’a assumed leadership after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which was overthrown by the opposition on December 8.
