Meta Platforms, the American company, announced on Wednesday that it had agreed to pay approximately $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump over the suspension of his accounts following the Capitol riot by some of his supporters on January 6, 2021.

The former president had sued Twitter (now X), Meta, and Alphabet (Google’s parent company), as well as their executives, accusing them of illegally silencing conservative viewpoints.

The lawsuit came after Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended following his speech, in which he repeated claims that his 2020 election defeat was due to widespread fraud.

Of the settlement amount, $22 million will go into a fund for Trump’s presidential library, while the rest will cover legal fees and other plaintiffs in the case.

Meta filed a settlement notice with a federal court in San Francisco.
