National Strike: Moroccan Labor Union Takes Action

The Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) has announced a nationwide strike in both the public and private sectors on February 5th and 6th. This action protests against what it calls « anti-social policies, » denouncing rising prices, the freezing of social dialogue, and the passage of the strike law through « underhanded means. »
This decision was made following an extraordinary meeting of the UMT’s national leadership.
In its statement, the union accuses the government of « aligning itself with employers » at the expense of workers and of ignoring the severe social and economic crisis affecting citizens. It holds the government responsible for the worsening social tensions.
The UMT also condemns employment, retirement, and public service policies, arguing that they worsen the hardships faced by workers and the general population. It demands a halt to soaring prices, the withdrawal of the strike law, and the initiation of genuine social dialogue to ensure concrete commitments on wage and pension improvements. The union warns that this strike is only the beginning of a broader wave of protests if the government maintains its current course.
