Morocco Faces a Meat Sector Crisis: Rising Concerns

Morocco is experiencing a severe crisis in the meat sector, with a significant decline in the national livestock estimated between 40% and 50%, as revealed by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour.
Despite the government’s decision to resort to livestock imports, this measure has not been sufficient to bridge the market deficit. During a parliamentary session, Mezzour highlighted several challenges hindering imports, including restrictions on livestock transportation and soaring prices in global markets.
Additionally, some consumers are reluctant to buy imported meat, further complicating the situation.
The government is working to implement effective solutions to ensure meat availability at reasonable prices. However, concerns are growing, especially with the upcoming Eid al-Adha, as projections suggest a potential rise in livestock prices compared to last year, adding financial strain on Moroccan households.
