A driver ran over a group of pedestrians in downtown Munich on Thursday morning, injuring nearly 30 people, including children, according to German authorities.
Police confirmed that at least 28 people were injured, two of them seriously. The suspect, a 24-year-old man, is an Afghan asylum seeker.
Bavarian Governor Markus Söder described the incident as a « suspected attack, » stating that it occurred around 10:30 AM in a square near the city center.
According to the police, the perpetrator was « neutralized » at the scene and no longer poses a threat.
A heavily damaged Mini car was seen at the scene, surrounded by debris, including shoes. One individual was detained by security forces.
Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, expressed his « deep shock, » emphasizing that children were among the injured. The incident happened near a labor union protest, though it remains unclear whether any demonstrators were affected.
This tragedy comes as Munich tightens security ahead of the Munich Security Conference, scheduled for Friday. It brings back memories of a December attack in Magdeburg, where a truck plowed into a crowd, killing five people and injuring over 200.
