
The 19th edition of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award has revealed its shortlists, featuring three Moroccan works in the categories of children’s literature, translation, and arts & critical studies.
Finalists include:
- « Taif Sabiba » by Latifa Lbasser (Morocco)
- « Maimouna and Her Crazy Ideas! » by Shereen Sbanekh (Jordan)
- « The Digital Fox » by Hegra El-Sawy (Egypt)
Shortlisted works:
- « The Demon of Theory: Literature and Common Sense » by Antoine Compagnon, translated from French to Arabic by Hassan Taleb (Morocco)
- « One Thousand and One Nights: The Book of Love », translated from Arabic to German by Claudia Ott (Germany)
- « Hrochiosh » by Paulus Hrochiosh, translated from Arabic to English by Marco Di Branco (Italy)
Finalists:
- « Food and Words: Rhetorical and Cultural Excavations in Arab Heritage » by Saïd Al-Aouadi (Morocco)
- « Poetry and Prophecy: Al-Mutanabbi in Poetry » by Rita Awad (Palestine)
- « Samarra Urbanism: A Study on Abbasid City Architecture and Planning » by Khaled Al-Sultani (Iraq)
- Literature: Ahmad Mourad (« The Sphinx », Egypt), Saud Al-Sanoussi (« The Trilogy of the Clay City Travels », Kuwait), Hoda Barakat (« Hind or the Most Beautiful Woman in the World », Lebanon/France)
- Development & State Building: Mohammed Bechari (« The Right to Work and Service », UAE), Hossam Al-Din Darwich (« Philosophy of Recognition and Identity Politics », Syria/Germany), Amjad Al-Din Khmash (« Cities and Trade in Arab and Islamic Civilization », Jordan)
- Arab Culture in Other Languages: Andrew Peacock (« Arab Literary Culture in Southeast Asia in the 17th and 18th Centuries », UK), Beatrice Gründler (« The Rise of the Arabic Book », Germany), Hakan Ozkan (« History of Eastern Zajal Poetry », Turkey)
- Manuscript Editing: Rachid Al-Khayoun (« Women’s Stories », Iraq/UK), Saleh Al-Jassar (« Explanation of the Hanging Poems », Saudi Arabia), Ahmed Juma Abdel Hamid (« The Moving Stars in Visit Organization », Egypt)
The « Young Author » and « Publishing & Cultural Technologies » categories were suspended this year.
The award received over 4,000 nominations from 75 countries, including 20 Arab nations and 55 foreign ones.
