Discovery of an Ancient Tablet in Spain

A team from the magazine « Argarica » has discovered a stone tablet engraved with symbols resembling the Tifinagh script in the Escolar region of Almería, in southeastern Spain.
On January 9, the Almería Museum hosted a conference titled « The Escolar Tablet and Libyco-Berber Writings, » organized by the Spanish Cultural Center in collaboration with Argarica magazine and the « Friends of the Kasbah » association.
Professor Ahmed Skounti, an anthropologist at the National Institute of Archaeological Sciences and Heritage in Rabat and UNESCO coordinator for the Middle East and Africa, highlighted the significance of this discovery. According to him, the inscriptions closely resemble ancient Libyan texts and the Tifinagh script, which is widespread across North Africa and the Canary Islands.
According to Moroccan and Spanish experts, this tablet could be the first of its kind found in the Iberian Peninsula, opening new avenues for archaeological research in the Sierra de los Filabres region to decipher its meaning and establish its historical context.
Ahmed Skounti also suggested the possibility of other inscriptions and carvings in the same area, given the evident traces of human activity still present today.
A renowned specialist in ancient Amazigh and Libyan script, Skounti emphasizes the need for a comprehensive inventory of inscriptions and archaeological sites in the Sierra de los Filabres, including tombs, roads, and terraces, which could be linked to this historic discovery.
